Best Ruin Bars in Budapest: 3 Places I Recommend as local
If you are visiting Budapest, one of the things I would definitely recommend experiencing is a ruin bar. They have become a big part of Budapest nightlife and are quite different from your typical bar or pub.
When people search for the best ruin bars in Budapest, Szimpla Kert is usually the first name that comes up, and for good reason. But there are actually quite a few different places to choose from, and they can offer very different experiences.
Some are huge and busy, some are smaller and more cosy, and some are better if you actually want to sit down and have a proper meal.
So, depending on what kind of experience you are looking for, here are three Budapest ruin bars I would recommend checking out while you are in the city.
1. Szimpla Kert – the most famous ruin bar in Budapest

If you have heard of ruin bars in Budapest before, chances are you have also heard of Szimpla Kert.
It is the biggest and most well-known ruin bar in Budapest, and for a first visit, I think it is definitely worth checking out.
It has so many different rooms, little corners and spaces to explore that you can easily spend a good amount of time here. You never quite know what you are going to find in the next room, which is part of the fun.
There is also an inner courtyard, which is great during the summer months. You can sit outside, have a drink and have a good conversation with your friends while still enjoying the atmosphere of one of Budapest's most famous ruin bars.
Szimpla is also more than just a bar. On Sundays, they have a farmers' market, and depending on the weekend, there can also be local artists and other events happening here.
When should you visit Szimpla Kert?
If you get the chance, I would recommend going around opening time if you want to avoid the crowds. This gives you a much better chance to walk around and actually see all the different rooms without having people everywhere.
However, if you are looking for a bit more atmosphere and want to see some life, I would recommend going between around 3–7 PM.
After that, it starts getting much more crowded, especially later in the evening.
Another big plus is that entrance is free, so you don't have to pay just to experience the place.
One thing I would keep in mind, though, is the pricing. The prices are mostly aimed at visitors and tourists, so some drinks can feel a little overpriced compared with other bars in Budapest.
I still think it is worth visiting, especially if it is your first time experiencing Budapest's ruin bar scene. Just don't expect it to be the cheapest place for drinks in the city.
2. Csendes – a smaller and more quirky Budapest ruin bar

My second option would be Csendes.
This is a much smaller place and, personally, I think it is better for the colder months of the year. It has a more intimate and cosy atmosphere compared with Szimpla, so it is a good option when you want somewhere to sit down, have a drink and enjoy the surroundings.
You do have to purchase a beverage to be able to sit and enjoy the atmosphere, but honestly, the atmosphere is one of the main reasons I would recommend coming here.
There are great writings and drawings on the walls, and the whole place is very creative and quirky.
You can get drinks served in jars or old cups, and a lot of the things around the bar have been reused and given a new purpose.
This is actually one of the things that makes Csendes interesting. The place is very much built around the idea that things can be reused instead of simply being thrown away.
It doesn't feel like a polished modern bar, and that is exactly what I like about it. It is a little strange, a little chaotic and very different from your typical Budapest bar.
I would say this one is more for drinks and snacks rather than somewhere I would go specifically for a full meal.
So if you are visiting Budapest in autumn or winter and want somewhere smaller, cosy and quirky to have a drink, Csendes is a good option.
3. Púder Bárszínház – food, drinks and a quirky atmosphere
📍 Ráday utca 8, 1092 Budapest
My last option is for people who would like to enjoy a nice meal together with a quirky atmosphere.
Púder Bárszínház has a really quirky indoor environment and also has outdoor seating for the warmer months.
This makes it a nice option if you want to sit down for longer, have some drinks and actually eat something while still getting that unusual Budapest ruin-bar atmosphere.
They have great drink and food options, including Hungarian food on the menu. They also have specials and somewhat of a seasonal menu, so there are usually different things to try depending on when you visit.
The prices are decent — nothing fancy.
The portion sizes are okay for the price, although I would say they are maybe a little bit too expensive for the portions. But the quality is great, and I really like the atmosphere of the place.
Visiting Púder with a bigger group?
If you are coming with a group of more than 6 people, sitting outside might be a little tricky if you don't make a reservation in advance.
It might also take them a little longer to serve you if you are a bigger group, so keep that in mind when planning your evening.
If you are travelling with a larger group, I would definitely recommend making a reservation instead of simply showing up and hoping they will have enough space.
Which ruin bar in Budapest should you visit?
I don't think there is one single "best" ruin bar in Budapest because it really depends on what kind of experience you are looking for.
🍺 Szimpla Kert → If you want the classic and most famous Budapest ruin bar experience.
🍷 Csendes → If you want somewhere smaller, cosy and quirky for drinks and snacks.
🍽️ Púder Bárszínház → If you want food, drinks and a fun atmosphere.
If you have enough time in Budapest, you could even visit more than one. They are different enough that you won't necessarily feel like you are experiencing the same place twice.
And this is why I like recommending specific ruin bars in Budapest rather than simply telling everyone to "go to a ruin bar." Depending on where you go, the atmosphere, crowd and overall experience can be completely different.
