As the end of November rolls in and winter starts whispering through the streets of Budapest, something magical quietly returns: the Fényvillamos — the city’s beloved festive “light-tram” fleet. It’s not just a ride — it’s a moving holiday postcard, and this year the glow is back on, full force.
🎄 What Is the Fényvillamos?
The Fényvillamos isn’t just one tram — it's a whole fleet of public-transport vehicles wrapped in lights: from vintage trams to modern ones, even a cogwheel railway, and more. Each is decorated with strings of LED lights, turning everyday rides into shimmering, festive experiences.
So whether you’re riding a regular route or hopping on just for fun, you get to travel through Budapest under a warm, magical glow.

🚋 What’s in the 2025/26 Light Fleet?
This season’s light-fleet is especially rich:
Several illuminated trams — not only the classic “light tram,” but also modern variants (multiple tram types), all decorated for the holiday mood
A festive light-cogwheel railway (fogaskerekű), for a unique ride up the hills
A “Santa Bus” (Mikulásbusz) and other light-decorated vehicles in the fleet for those who prefer buses or different routes.
In short: there’s more than one way to catch the holiday lights — and many types of vehicles to make your ride special.
📅 When & How Does It Work This Season?
The 2025/26 season runs from 28 November 2025 until 6 January 2026.
Every day (within that period) the light-trams and other festive vehicles service runs from 16:00 (4 PM) until late evening.
Only exceptions: 24 December and 31 December — those dates are excluded.
No extra ticket needed — if you have a valid regular public-transport ticket or pass, you’re good. The festive fleet rides under the regular fare system.
That’s the best part: you don’t need a special ticket, just hop on — no extra cost, just extra magic.
🌃 What It Feels Like — Why It’s a Must-Do
Imagine boarding a tram at dusk. The street lights are on, reflections dance on wet pavements (or maybe fresh snow), and then the tram pulls up — wrapped in thousands of twinkling lights, windows glowing warm, soft lights spilling onto the street.
You ride through familiar streets that suddenly feel different: cozy, dreamy, festive. The illuminated trams turning routine commutes into small winter adventures.
Whether you happen across it by chance, or plan a little outing — it works. It’s warm enough to make your evening walk more special, spontaneous enough to surprise you when you least expect it.
And because it uses normal tickets — it works for locals and visitors alike. Holiday magic doesn’t have to cost extra.
🧭 Practical Tips to Make the Most of It
Go after 16:00 (4 PM) — that’s when the lights are on and dusk has fallen.
Watch the schedule or real-time updates to catch which festive vehicle is running (tram, cogwheel, bus) and where. Routes change daily.
For photos: sit by the windows or ride along the Danube lines — reflections, city lights, and water make the glow even more magical.
Combine with other winter activities — a walk through lights, a warm drink, or a stroll by the river — the Fényvillamos becomes part of a bigger, cozy evening.
✨ Why the Fényvillamos Is Pure Budapest Holiday Magic
The Fényvillamos is a simple idea: deck out public transport with lights. But in reality, it’s become one of Budapest’s best winter traditions. No extra cost, no need for a plan — just show up, ride, and enjoy.
