Parking in Budapest city centre can feel confusing at first, especially in District V (Belváros), District VI (Terézváros), and District VII (Erzsébetváros).
The system is not complicated, but it is strict and heavily controlled. If you don’t understand the rules, you can easily receive a parking fine—even as a tourist.
The good news is that once you know how parking in Budapest works, it becomes very easy to navigate.

Budapest uses a zoned parking system, where the city centre is divided into paid parking areas.
The central districts (V, VI, VII) are typically:

💳 How to Pay for Parking in Budapest
Important update for 2026: As of July 1, 2026, Budapest no longer uses parking meters for street parking. You can no longer buy a parking ticket from the machines, and the old cash/card payment system has been discontinued. Parking is now paid digitally through mobile parking services.
So if you see an old parking meter on the street, don’t put any coins or cash into it — it is no longer a valid way to pay for parking.
There are now two main ways to pay for street parking in Budapest:
1. 📱 Parking apps — easiest option for tourists
For visitors, I recommend using a mobile parking app. Some of the commonly available options include:

These apps allow you to start and stop your parking from your phone and pay by card.
Before starting your parking, make sure you enter:
Your license plate number
The correct country code if you have a foreign-registered car
The correct parking zone
⚠️ Be very careful with these details. If you enter the wrong license plate, country code or parking zone, you can still receive a parking fine even if you have technically paid for parking.

2. 📲 SMS or phone parking — mainly useful if you have a Hungarian phone number
If you have a Hungarian mobile phone number, you can also start your parking by SMS or phone call through the mobile parking system.
This can be particularly convenient for people with a Hungarian mobile subscription because the parking fee can be charged to their monthly phone bill rather than requiring a separate card payment. For example, Telekom and One both offer mobile parking through their mobile services.
If you're a tourist with a foreign phone number, however, I would stick with a parking app. It is generally much simpler than trying to use the Hungarian SMS system.
⚠️ One important thing to remember
Paying for parking is not enough — you need to make sure the parking session was actually started successfully.
Always check the confirmation in the app or wait for the confirmation SMS before walking away from your car.
And double-check your license plate and parking zone. One tiny mistake can turn a perfectly legal parking session into an expensive Budapest souvenir. 😅
Parking meters are gone, but paid parking definitely isn't. So make sure you have a mobile payment option ready before leaving your car.
