The Pentecost weekend is one of the most special times to experience Budapest. As spring turns the city bright and lively, Budapest’s historic churches fill with festive liturgies, choir music, and holiday celebrations. Pentecost is one of the most important Christian holidays, celebrating the descent of the Holy Spirit, and many of the city’s most beautiful churches hold special masses throughout the weekend.
In 2026, Pentecost Sunday falls on May 24, while Pentecost Monday is celebrated on May 25.

St. Stephen's Basilica – Budapest’s Most Iconic Church

The most popular churches, especially St. Stephen’s Basilica and Matthias Church, can fill up quickly during holiday masses, so arriving 20–30 minutes early is recommended.

On Pentecost Monday, several churches continue with either holiday or Sunday schedules.
