When Do the Christmas Markets Open in Budapest in 2026?

If you are planning a Christmas trip to Budapest this year, one of the questions I get quite often is: when do the Christmas markets actually open?

Budapest has several Christmas markets around the city, and they don't all start at the same time.

The two big and most famous ones in the city centre usually open earlier, while some of the smaller, more local markets start around the beginning of Advent.

One important thing before we get into the dates: not all of the 2026 dates have been officially announced yet. The dates below are based on the usual schedule from previous years and the information that is currently available. I would always recommend checking the official websites before your trip, especially if you are travelling specifically for the Christmas markets.

The two big Christmas markets in central Budapest

Vörösmarty Square Christmas Market

The Christmas market at Vörösmarty Square is probably the one most people picture when they think about Christmas in Budapest.

It is right in the heart of the city, at the end of Váci Street, and it is one of the main Christmas markets I would recommend visiting if you are in Budapest during the festive season.

Based on previous years, I would expect the market to open around mid-November 2026.

The 2025 market opened on November 14, so a similar mid-November opening would make sense for 2026.

The market usually stays open through the end of December, with the Christmas market itself giving way to New Year's Eve celebrations around the end of the year. The exact 2026 closing arrangements have not yet been announced.

Advent Basilica – St. Stephen's Square

The other big Christmas market is the Advent Basilica in front of St. Stephen's Basilica.

This is another market that usually opens around mid-November.

The 2025 market opened on November 14 and ran until January 1, 2026, so I would expect a similar schedule for 2026 unless the organisers announce otherwise.

One thing I particularly like about this market is the setting. Having the Basilica lit up behind the market makes it especially beautiful in the evening, when the Christmas lights and projections are on.

What about the smaller Christmas markets?

This is where the dates can be a little different.

Advent Óbudán

If you would like to see a more local Christmas market, I really like the one in Óbuda, around Fő tér.

It is a different experience from the two big central markets. It feels more local and is especially nice if you want to get away from the busiest tourist areas.

In previous years, the market has run until just before Christmas, usually around December 23. The 2025 programme, for example, ran from November 28 to December 23.

So if you are visiting Budapest after Christmas, this is one to keep in mind: Óbuda's Christmas market normally finishes before Christmas itself.

Christmas market in the Buda Castle District

There is also a smaller Christmas market in the Buda Castle District, around Szentháromság Square and Matthias Church.

This one also normally starts around the first weekend of Advent rather than in mid-November.

The nice thing about this one is that you can combine the Christmas market with exploring the Buda Castle District, Matthias Church and Fisherman's Bastion.

And if you are visiting Budapest after Christmas, this is one of the markets I would keep in mind, because unlike Óbuda, it can continue into the New Year and sometimes into the first weekend of January.

So, roughly when should you expect the markets to open?

Here is the simple version to give a rough idea for the opening dates

Please keep in mind that these dates are not all final official 2026 dates yet.

The main central markets have not yet published their final 2026 dates on their official websites. Based on previous years, I would expect more information to appear around mid-October, so this is something I would check again closer to your trip.

There are already websites publishing specific 2026 Christmas market dates, but I would not automatically trust every date you see online. Some websites publish estimates based on previous years before the organisers have officially confirmed anything.

My advice: use the dates above as a guide, but always check the official market website before you go.

Which Christmas market should you visit?

If you are only in Budapest for a short time, the two central markets — Vörösmarty Square and Advent Basilica — are the easiest ones to include because they are both right in the city centre and relatively close to each other.

If you have more time, I would definitely add Óbuda or the Buda Castle District to your plans.

And honestly, you don't necessarily need to spend hours at a Christmas market. Budapest itself is incredibly beautiful in winter, and combining a market visit with sightseeing, a walk along the Danube or exploring one of the historic neighbourhoods can make for a much nicer day.

So if you are planning your Budapest Christmas trip now, save this guide, check the official websites again around mid-October, and then plan your market visits once the final dates are announced.
