If you are visiting Budapest between September and November, you are coming at a great time of year to experience a different side of the city.
The summer crowds begin to thin out, the weather becomes more comfortable for sightseeing, and Budapest's cultural and event calendar gets seriously busy. From wine and beer festivals to major concerts, contemporary art, running events and cultural festivals, there is plenty happening across the city.
Here are some of the best events taking place in Budapest in autumn 2026 that are worth knowing about before your trip.
September Events in Budapest
Downtown Beer Festival
If you like beer, this is one of the easiest autumn events to add to your Budapest itinerary.
The 10th Downtown Beer Festival (Belvárosi Sörfesztivál) takes over Szabadság Square for six days, bringing more than 250 different beers from Hungarian and international breweries to the heart of Budapest. There is also street food, live music, evening entertainment and beer premieres.

The location is particularly convenient for tourists. Szabadság Square is only a short walk from both Parliament and St. Stephen's Basilica, so you can easily combine the festival with sightseeing in the city centre.
Entry to the festival is free, but if you want to taste the beers, you need to purchase the festival's official reusable glass.
This is a great choice if you want something relaxed and social rather than a formal wine tasting or concert.
Wizz Air Budapest Half Marathon
The first big event of Budapest's autumn season is one for runners — and for everyone who enjoys watching a city come alive.
The 41st Wizz Air Budapest Half Marathon takes place in September, with several race distances available, including the main half-marathon, a 10 km race and relay options.

The route takes runners through some of the most beautiful parts of Budapest, with views of the Danube and several UNESCO World Heritage areas along the way.
You do not have to run to enjoy the event. If you are sightseeing that day, expect temporary road closures and changes to traffic and public transportation around the route.
Good to know: If you are staying in Budapest that weekend, check your route before heading out in the morning. Budapest is beautiful when thousands of people are running through it — slightly less beautiful when you are desperately trying to cross the course with a suitcase.
Budapest Wine Festival
If there is one autumn event I would particularly recommend to visitors interested in Hungarian culture and food, this is it.
The 35th Budapest Wine Festival takes place in the spectacular surroundings of Buda Castle.

This year's guest of honour is the Americas, so alongside the enormous selection of Hungarian wines, visitors can discover wines from countries including the United States, Argentina, Uruguay and Chile.
The festival also features wine tastings, gastronomy, live music and evening programmes.
The location is arguably half the experience. Imagine tasting Hungarian wine while looking across the Danube towards the illuminated Parliament.
Hungary has a surprisingly diverse wine culture, and this is one of the easiest ways for visitors to discover wines from regions such as Tokaj, Eger and Villány without having to travel around the entire country.
My tip: If you are interested in wine, don't just drink the famous sweet Tokaji. Ask the producers what they would recommend from their region. Hungarian wine is much more varied than many visitors expect.
Budapest Park's Autumn Concerts

Budapest Park is normally associated with summer concerts, but the season continues well into September and even into early October.
The 2026 autumn programme includes some of Hungary's biggest contemporary artists as well as international acts.

Oktoberfest Budapest
You don't have to travel to Munich to get a taste of Oktoberfest.

Expect Bavarian beer, pretzels, sausages, live music and plenty of people wearing traditional German clothing.
The Margaret Island location is particularly fun if the weather is still pleasant, while Erzsébet Square is right in the middle of the city centre.
The event is free to attend, although food and drinks are, naturally, not free.
If you are visiting Budapest with friends and want something casual and social in the evening, this is an easy event to add to your itinerary.
October Events in Budapest
Budapest International Book Festival
Book lovers have their own autumn festival in Budapest.
The 31st Budapest International Book Festival takes place in October and brings together authors, publishers and readers from Hungary and abroad.

The 2026 festival focuses on German-language literature, with Germany, Austria and Switzerland as guest countries. Irish author Colm Tóibín is the festival's guest of honour.
There will be author talks, book presentations, discussions and signings.
This isn't necessarily an event I would send every first-time visitor to Budapest for, but if you are a serious reader or interested in literature, it is worth checking the programme.
Liszt Ünnep
October is when Budapest's cultural calendar really gets going.
The Liszt Ünnep International Cultural Festival takes place across several venues in Budapest, celebrating the 210th anniversary of the birth of Hungarian composer Franz Liszt.

Despite the name, this isn't simply a classical-music festival.
The programme includes classical and contemporary music, jazz, popular music, dance, literature and visual arts.
For example, British experimental electronic duo Autechre performs at the House of Music Hungary on October 8 as part of the festival.
So whether you are into classical music or something considerably more experimental, there may be something for you.
SPAR Budapest Marathon Festival
If the half marathon in September isn't enough running for you, Budapest has another major sporting weekend in October.
The 41st SPAR Budapest Marathon Festival takes place over two days, with a variety of distances ranging from shorter races to the full 42.2 km marathon.

The marathon route is one of the reasons the event is so popular internationally: participants get to run through one of Europe's most spectacular capital cities, alongside the Danube and past some of Budapest's best-known landmarks.
For visitors who are not running, the atmosphere around the city can still be fun — but, once again, check transportation information before planning a busy sightseeing day.
Art Market Budapest
If you prefer art to athletics, October has something for you too.
Art Market Budapest is one of Central and Eastern Europe's major international contemporary art fairs, bringing together galleries and artists from Hungary and abroad.

The fair features contemporary painting, photography, sculpture and other forms of visual art.

Design Without Borders

Halloween is not a traditional Hungarian holiday in the same way it is in the United States or the United Kingdom, but Budapest has embraced the occasion with themed parties, concerts and special events.
And because October 31, 2026 falls on a Saturday, there are several options if you want to experience Halloween in Budapest.
Gatsby Halloween Party
If you are looking for something a little more glamorous than a typical Halloween party, the Gatsby Halloween Party at Orfeum combines a 1920s-inspired atmosphere with Halloween.

Rémségek Kicsiny Éjszakája, or "Little Night of Horrors", is a Halloween-themed concert featuring the Budafoki Dohnányi Orchestra, Budapest Academic Choral Society and ARLtistic Dance Company.
The programme plays with the classic Halloween imagery of monsters, witches, devils and vampires, combining music, dance and lighting effects.

Hiperkarma Halloween
For something more local, check out the annual Halloween concert by Hungarian alternative-rock band Hiperkarma.

If you are looking for a proper late-night Halloween party, Akvárium Klub also hosts International Halloween Madness.

November is quieter than September and October, but that does not mean there is nothing happening.
In fact, this is when Budapest's indoor cultural programme becomes particularly attractive.
Budapest Ballet Grand Prix
The Budapest Ballet Grand Prix returns for its fourth edition in November.

The international competition is organised by the Hungarian Dance University and brings together young ballet dancers aged 13–22 from around the world.

The Bordeaux November Grand Tasting focuses on Bordeaux-style red wines, particularly Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot.

September and October are considerably busier in Budapest's event calendar than November.
If you want outdoor festivals, wine, concerts and a lively atmosphere, September is a particularly strong choice.
October is probably the best month for culture, art and major events.
November is quieter, colder and darker — but it is also when Budapest's museums, concert halls, theatres and thermal baths become especially appealing.
