One of my favourite things about Budapest in the summer is how the city transforms during major sporting events. Terraces fill up, strangers become friends for ninety minutes, and you'll hear cheers echoing through the streets every time someone scores.

If you're visiting Budapest during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, you won't have to search hard to find somewhere showing the matches. Whether you're after a lively fan zone, a rooftop with cocktails, or a traditional sports pub, Budapest has plenty of great options.

Here are my favourite places to watch the World Cup as a local guide.

Szabadság Square (Szabadság tér) – Best Overall

Atmosphere

📍 District V – Budapest City Centre

If you're only planning to watch one match while you're in Budapest, this would be my first recommendation.

The public fan zone attracts both locals and visitors from around the world, creating an atmosphere that's difficult to beat. Expect giant screens, food trucks, pop-up bars, and hundreds of fans celebrating together. Even if Hungary isn't playing, the energy is fantastic during the knockout rounds.

Because it's located in the heart of the city, it's also within walking distance of the Hungarian Parliament, St. Stephen's Basilica, and the Danube Promenade, making it easy to combine sightseeing with football.

Zsiráf Pest

📍 Next to Nyugati Railway Station:

This is one of the easiest places to reach if you're staying in the city centre.

Zsiráf has become a popular meeting point thanks to its spacious outdoor terrace, giant LED screen, casual street food, and excellent beer selection. It's especially popular with younger locals and international visitors, creating a fun and social atmosphere before and after the matches.

Holdudvar

📍 City Park (Városliget): 1146 Budapest, Állatkerti körút 3.

If you'd rather escape the busy downtown streets, Holdudvar offers a completely different setting.

Located inside Budapest's beautiful City Park, it's surrounded by trees and close to some of the city's biggest attractions, including Heroes' Square, Vajdahunyad Castle, the House of Music Hungary, and the Széchenyi Thermal Baths.

Watching a match here after spending the day exploring the park makes for a perfect Budapest summer evening.

Majorka

📍 Buda Side – Városmajor: 1122 Budapest, Városmajor utca 59.

Many visitors never spend enough time exploring the Buda side of the city. If you're staying near Buda Castle or heading to Gellért Hill, Majorka is a fantastic option for an evening match.

Its spacious garden, relaxed neighbourhood feel, and excellent burgers make it one of the most enjoyable outdoor venues during the tournament.

Traditional Sports Pubs

If you prefer watching football the classic way—with multiple screens, passionate supporters, and plenty of beer—you'll feel right at home in Budapest.

Some excellent choices include:

  • Champs Sport Pub

    • 1072 Budapest, Dohány utca 20.

  • Winners Sports Pub:

    • 1061 Budapest, Andrássy út 4.

  • Fortunato Sport Bar & Kitchen

    • 1073 Budapest, Erzsébet körút 31.

  • Ziccer – TrollFoci Sport Pub -

    • 1082 Budapest, Kisfaludy utca 28.

These venues tend to attract dedicated football fans, making them ideal if you're hoping to experience the excitement alongside locals.

Tereza

📍 District VI: 1065 Budapest, Nagymező utca 3.

Not every football night has to revolve around beer.

Tereza combines World Cup screenings with one of Budapest's best Mexican-inspired courtyards, serving tacos, margaritas, and cocktails. It's a great option if you're travelling as a couple or with friends who may not be football fanatics but still want to enjoy the atmosphere.

Miamor Rómaim

📍 Római-part: 1031 Budapest, Római-part

If you have an afternoon free before an evening kick-off, head north to Római-part.

This riverside area is popular with locals during the summer thanks to its cycling paths, outdoor bars, and relaxed atmosphere. Watching football here feels a little more like being on holiday than sitting in a sports bar.

A Few Local Tips

Reserve for the biggest matches

Semi-finals and the final will likely sell out at many venues. If reservations are available, it's worth booking a few days ahead.

Public transport is your friend

Budapest's metro, trams, and buses run late into the evening, making it easy to get back to your accommodation after the match. Parking in the city centre can be difficult, especially on event nights.

Come hungry

Many venues offer much more than drinks. From gourmet burgers and Neapolitan pizza to Mexican cuisine and classic Hungarian pub food, watching football is often paired with a great meal.

Expect international crowds

Budapest welcomes millions of visitors every year, and during the World Cup you'll likely find yourself watching alongside supporters from all over the world. Even if your team isn't playing, the atmosphere is friendly and incredibly welcoming.

Final Thoughts

One of the things I love most about Budapest is that every neighbourhood offers a different experience. Whether you choose the festival atmosphere of Szabadság Square, a rooftop overlooking the city, or a relaxed beer garden in Buda, you're guaranteed to find a great place to enjoy the World Cup.

If you're planning your trip around the tournament, I'd recommend combining your match days with sightseeing. Spend the morning exploring Buda Castle, relaxing in one of Budapest's famous thermal baths, or wandering through the historic city centre before settling in to watch the game. It's the perfect way to experience both Budapest and the excitement of the World Cup.
