At the end of May, Budapest will host one of the biggest sporting weekends in Europe, and surprisingly, one of the main stars of the event will not just be the stadium — it will be Városliget, Budapest’s historic City Park.

According to Liget Budapest, the park is preparing to host one of the largest events in its nearly 200-year history during the UEFA Champions League Final weekend. Tens of thousands of football fans from around the world are expected to arrive in the Hungarian capital, transforming parts of the city into massive gathering spaces filled with international supporters, entertainment, and celebrations.

The 2026 UEFA Champions League Final itself will take place on May 30 at the iconic Puskás Aréna, where Arsenal F.C. and Paris Saint-Germain F.C. will face off in one of the most anticipated football matches of the year. But while the match happens inside the stadium, much of the atmosphere will spill directly into Városliget and the surrounding areas.

Why Városliget Is the Perfect Place for This Event

For locals, Városliget has always been far more than just a park. It is one of Budapest’s most important public spaces — a place where people go for morning runs, weekend walks, museum visits, concerts, festivals, family programs, or simply to relax under the trees away from the busy city center.

But over the last decade, the park has gone through an enormous transformation thanks to the Liget Budapest Project, one of Europe’s largest urban renewal developments. The goal was not only to modernize the park, but also to restore it as a vibrant cultural and recreational hub while protecting its historic character and green spaces.

If you visited Városliget years ago and return today, parts of it feel completely different.

The park now features:

  • a huge modern sports center

  • football and basketball courts

  • outdoor fitness parks

  • youth sports fields

  • climbing walls

  • cycling and skate areas

  • dog parks

  • botanical gardens

  • playgrounds

  • museums and cultural institutions

  • a two-kilometer illuminated running track popular with locals year-round

The sports facilities alone helped turn Városliget into one of Budapest’s most active recreational

areas long before the Champions League Final arrived. Families spend entire afternoons at the enormous playground, runners circle the park late into the evening, and outdoor sports areas remain busy from morning until night.

At the same time, the project also heavily focused on greenery and sustainability. According to

Liget Budapest, more than 250,000 square meters of green space have already been renewed, with thousands of shrubs and flowers planted alongside hundreds of new trees. The result is a park that feels both modern and alive while still preserving its historic atmosphere.

And honestly, that balance is probably why the area works so well today. It does not feel like a cold, over-designed “city project.” It still feels like Budapest — just greener, cleaner, and much more functional.

Thousands of Fans Expected in Budapest

During the final weekend, Budapest is expected to welcome huge numbers of international visitors. Even supporters without match tickets are already planning to travel to the city simply to experience the atmosphere around the Champions League Final.

Many fans are expected to gather near Heroes’ Square and throughout Városliget, where public viewing areas, entertainment zones, food stands, and fan events will likely create a festival-like atmosphere across the park.

And even people who are not football fans will probably notice the energy.

Budapest during major international events always feels different. Terraces stay full until late at night, multiple languages echo through the streets, and the city suddenly feels even more international than usual. Around City Park, visitors can expect lively crowds, outdoor entertainment, music, and thousands of football supporters soaking in the atmosphere throughout the weekend.

Hotels and flights have already seen major price increases due to the overwhelming demand connected to the final. International media reports noted that some flight prices to Budapest surged dramatically after the final matchup was confirmed, showing just how significant this event has become for the city.

More Than Just a Football Weekend

What makes this event especially meaningful is how perfectly it connects Budapest’s history with its modern identity.

Originally opened more than 200 years ago, Városliget has witnessed generations of Budapest life. It has hosted festivals, fairs, exhibitions, concerts, sports events, and national celebrations throughout its long history. Now, it is preparing to become one of the central gathering points for Europe’s biggest football weekend.

For many locals, the transformation of Városliget also represents something bigger. For years, parts of the park had become neglected and underused. Today, it has become one of the capital’s busiest and most successful public spaces, attracting locals and tourists alike every single day.

And now, for one weekend in May, Budapest’s historic City Park will officially become the center of the sports world.

Not bad for a park that first opened in the early 19th century.
